$1200 for shocks, struts, and bushings? go with the ibook. At least then you won't feel like you are getting too taken.

Fix the car, get a second job as a delivery guy at Pizza Hut, earn more money for the MacBook.

fix the car or buy a different one. (used)
Download a Knoppix Live CD and run it in the computer. (runs from the CD only, no hard drive required)
It is a nice backup operating system to use in a pinch.
Remember.....a virus can't burn itself onto a cd!
here is the download mirror. check out the rest of the site to answer any further questions.
website = www.knoppix.net
mirror = http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
click on "http" protocol to download
and say yes to the free use agreement.
then, find an ISO file ending in "EN" for english version....and click to download.

Lack of a MacBook will not make you lose control and crash your car on a bumpy road. Lack of a good suspension will. Choice seems obvious.

i would definitely suggest fixing your car over replacing what you didn't state as already being broken but is just old (MacBook). a safe car is far more important and you could probably hop on anyone else's computer if you really needed to.

Put the $1200 towards another vehicle that is more fuel efficient and newer. Be practical!

Duh!!! I'd definitely fix the car as it's obviously unsafe. If the iBook goes away, you'll only lose access to the 'Web; if the suspension on the car goes away, you could lose your life!! Good luck!
