Some of the answers are totally incorrect. It does matter how you torque down the head bolts of a Briggs motor. All the different size motors use a different sequence. Two ways to accomplish the task, take your model type and code number to the repair shop that you bought your head gasket from and ask for the sequence and torques specs. go to briggs home page and ask the question. Without the model type and code I cannot give you the correct info.

It would be best to buy the book or Google for the information as you really need to look at the drawing or diagram so as to identify the number of each head bolt and tighten them as directed. Specified torque and sequence, too.

You might find the book in the library and photo copy the diagram to take home.

Good Luck!

start in the center work your way out evenly. Where there pretty snug pulling firm on a 10 or 12 in ratchet should be fine. its a briggs not a ford. dont have to be exact

if you cannot find the proper sequence-start at a at the most center bolt then
go criss cross in towards out evenly, low torques first then increase gradually-i.e. 10-30-40-etc. i use this method all the time with no problems
