Poltergeist translates more or less to noisy ghost. This was because people believed that these ghosts moved, broke, and threw things.
However, current theory on this is that poltergeist activity is RSPK (recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis). This activity is thought to be from a person (called the agent or focus) manifesting (without their knowledge) physical activity. The best work on this to date has been by William Roll who wrote the book "The Poltergeist".
This activity is usually associated with unexpressed emotionally conflict which is why it came to be associated with teenagers, although this is not always the case.

Ghosts (I prefer the term apparition) are visual representations of a person that you know not to be physically present at your location. Note with this definition that a ghost can be a crisis apparition (a family member you see at a time they are in crisis like a car wreck) of a person very much alive. A deceased person would of course also meet this definition.
The term ghost is often used to mean the surviving spirit of a deceased person so this would make them different from a poltergeist that is always associated with a living person in some way.

poltergeists can move things. Ghosts can be spiritual, like the Holy Ghost. Google the two and you will find a lot of information on both of them. Watch the Sci-Fi channel.

Poltergeists tend to be mischievous and can cause things to move about and can do harm. Ghosts are non corporeal entities that do not have any real power. They are often just trapped or lost, and often do not even know that they are dead.

Regular ghosts are just spirits going about their business. Poltergeists are psychotics who try to make life miserable for everyone.

My understanding is that a poltergeist is more of a destructive force than a ghost, which is a trapped spirit. Poltergeists do damage.

A ghost is just a free roaming spirit that is totally harm-less....... A poltergeist is a demon.. A nasty foul mouth demon that can be very harm-full to a humans body and to a humans home........ And the damage that they do to you and your home can amount to a great deal of money... Plus the are very hard to get rid of....................

Earth Bound Spirits/Ghosts, Poltergeists and Haunting
taken from Susan Norgren's soon to be released book
"Lost Pallies"

Spirits will have very specific reasons why they want to remain in our dimension. It may be to finish up old business, to give comfort to loved ones, or because they are afraid to move on into the light for fear of going to hell or a place of punishment. Many times the spirit doesn’t know they are dead. In an extreme situation, like a tragic accident or sudden death, they can become an earthbound spirit, unlike Grandma’s visit to offer comfort or to deliver a message as discussed above.

When an earthbound spirit becomes attached to a physical person or place, or when a grieving relative is continually focused on having their loved one who has passed near them, the spirit becomes stuck in between the physical world they lived in with their bodies, and the spirit world they need to go to on the other side. Becoming stuck between worlds causes the spirit to move away from its natural form of growing in the spirit world. This spirit is in limbo; and doesn’t know that it can be in all places at all times, because it has no bounds. A spirit in limbo can cause problems for the person or place it surrounds and for itself.

A haunting is any paranormal activity observed in buildings or in just about any other area. Haunting can be caused by discarnate entities that are trapped in a specific location by a powerful traumatic event. A haunting can also be done by an intelligent spirit who is attempting to make contact with someone on the earth plane to give a message to anyone who will listen.

A haunting occurs when a person or persons who are in spirit form become bound to the physical level. They become attached to a place or house and refuse to leave it. When a spirit haunts a house, it does not know it is only in energy form, having left its body quickly. Sometimes a spirit may be unwilling to grow in a way that is best for it. Without a body restricting it, but conforming to some degree to density and physical matter, this spirit remains confused and is unable to grow in its own dimension. It is not evil or negative, but can disrupt your life if you let it.

Poltergeists
Can the subconscious mind physically mold reality? The answer to that is yes when it comes to poltergeist activity. Entities can use humans who are angry or disturbed to trigger and bring out poltergeist energy. More commonly it shows up when there are young teenagers in the house. Their frustrations and repressed anger manifests in their subconscious, creating a childish mischievous spirit who enjoys playing pranks and causing havoc to humans. They like to move objects and furniture, making a lot of noise by banging things around, and they like to play hide and seek with objects. Sometimes, they even make clothing float through the air or turn lights on and off. People are unaware that their own anger, intense feelings or hormone fluctuations can create an environment for a poltergeist to manifest itself.
