I am starting up my own little e-Bay business and need some input. Basically, I want to sell things for people (parents or adults) that want to get rid of things but don't have the time to do so. I figured I can take care of e-Bay listings and shippings so they don't have to life a finger.

My question is, what is a fair commission to ask for when selling these goods (could be anything)? I was thinking maybe around 15%...but nothing over. What do you think?

If you're taking care of everything, I think you should charge more than 15% - try 25 - 30%. Think about the time it's going to take you to take photos and edit them, list the items and then pack and ship them. It all adds up to quite a lot of time per item. Add in researching similar items for sale and already sold on Ebay and that's extra time.

And what happens if the item doesn't sell - do you get any money for the time you have spent photographing and listing?

Maybe you could have a scale of fees - a higher percentage for the first $50, then decreasing (a bit like Ebay Final Value Fees!)

Good luck with it, Ebaying is great fun and I think you'll do really well with your idea, but don't sell your talents and time too cheap!

My nephew was charging 1/3 so 15% is more than fair. You might try a fixed amount for a 10.00 item you would only get 1.50 hardly worth the trouble but for a $2,000 item you would be paid more than it was worth so people might do it themselves.
