The most important thing , of course is to get good grades. As if you didn't already know that. The next is to know when the liquor store opens and closes.

1. Study (I know you hear this all the time but you really have to study if you want to pass. College is harder than high school and looking over a paper 5 minutes before a test probably won't work anymore because college questions are complex. In high school you could just memorize but in college you will actually need to understand concepts).
2. Don't cheat. (Plagiarism, copying, etc. can result in immediately failing a class or expulsion).
3. Prioritize (Have fun. Date, go out, participate in clubs, sports, greek life, etc. but remember you are in college for one reason: to graduate, so everything else is secondary).
4. Do whats best for you. (Don't be afraid to drop a class if it's too difficult. Try your best and if that doesn't work then get out before it's too late).
5. Communicate with your professors. (Ask questions, make eye contact, and try even answering a few questions. Things will run alot smoothier if you get along with your professors. Some of them will even go out of there way for you and write recommendation letters for graduate school or job employers).

That's all I can think of, although I'm sure there are more things. Those are the biggies though. Best wishes.

That you are there to learn and get the most out of your parents money.

That grades are important. You do your best and study hard.

That you won't like every professor. You just grin and bear it. Try to get thru the class and hope the next one is better.

Dropping a class and getting an incomplete is better than getting a big fat F on your report. You can always make up the class later and prove yourself.

Take some fun classes along with the hard ones so you do have some fun.

The most important thing you need to know is when is the last day to withdraw with a W and not a WF.

The next most important thing, drop classes when you realize you're not going to be able to succeed.

The next more important thing, go to class and insist on getting your money's worth.

Other important things: how is this class graded? When are major assignments due? What's the prof's office hours, phone #, and email address.

Learning how to manage your time wisely. This is very important when 24 hours in a day just doesn't seem to be enough.

Learning to focus. College definitely has it's distractions especially your freshman year. Keep in mind what your ultimate goal is otherwise you're paying for a very expensive 4 year party.

The most important thing you need to KNOW:
That you are responsible for your learning.
Professors are there to profess -- that is, they impart knowledge. It is your responsibility to learn it.
No one cares if you "like" your professors or not: you don't have to like them-- you do have to learn from them.
If you don't "get it," get help. Your professor is not responsible for noticing that you aren't keeping up -- YOU are responsible for noticing that you aren't keeping up and for getting the help you need.
While many professors do take attendance, few if any will follow up if you miss a lot of classes. The larger the college, the less likely anyone will keep track of your attendance. If you skip class, you miss important information, and you will reap the consequences of that imprudent behavior. No one will care if you whine or cry about it.

The most important think you need to DO:
Decide that you are there for an education and dedicate yourself to the task.
