what are good gifts for family for christmas when your 800 miles away from home? gift cards are too obvious, and kinda impersonal.

Why not try some homemade stuff? Like baked goods or jars of ingredients for your favorite recipes. Whats' wrong with gift cards? That way they can get something they really want.

you are not going to be with your family on christmas. give them something which makes them feel that you are with them.
like, a nice photo of your with your family, framed in a good way, if possible such photo they are unawre of, use tools to make a good family potrait.
and a special card for your mom.. a really special one.. along with one rose..
