I know about McDonalds and all the commuting, but this is a huge (no pun intended) problem over there. I know that us English are not that far behind as well. I'm just asking about what factors contribute to this aweful situation?

*Hormones and steroids in the meat placed there by giant agri-business mass slaughtering helpless chemical stuffed domesticated animals.

*Quantity, not quality on the menus of typical restaurants.

*Processed food at home with little good nutritional value, high in fats and sugars spoonfed to helpless children who know nothing else

*Some weird-@$$ food from China--no one knows what's in it, rat meat, lead paint, poisoned fish full of illegal anti-biotics that swim in filthy water, melamine, a coal derivative--if melamine is fattening, who knows it's usually mixed with wheat gluten (another poison that will cause your immune system to go crazy and your hair to fall out)--all this has been stuffed down the throats of Americans by their globalist government for years.

Pathetic-huh

Americans have been betrayed-- advertised to and molded into consumers to fatten corporate pockets and themselves--only to become mindless consumers ripened for a globalist world controlled by international corporate cabals that want them to be fattened, worker drones for the coming communist Dark Ages with no middle class, no constitution, and no hope.

or, or Americans can fight all this. It won't be easy, but easy is China-cheap now and the global cabals are counting on the citizen non-voting consumer's addiction to easy...

Of all the countries of the world, Americans are the fattest. Why? Although the cause is probably many of these answers, please say what you consider to be the MAIN cause.

Note 1: Yes of course some Americans aren't fat. This is referring to the population in general.

Note 2: Current statistics suggest that nearly 60% of Americans are significantly overweight - a higher figure than the rest of the world, with the exception of a few small Pacific islands

Maybe these=

They eat too much food
They eat high-calorie junk food
Too many growth hormones in the food
They don't do enough exercise
They are lazy
They drive everywhere
It is the fault of the fast-food retailers
Because of their genetic make-up
I don't know

Ducky is right on with the healthy food being more expensive. It is ridiculous that a package of cookies is half the price of a bag of apples. I wish I could afford to buy more fruits and veggies or I wish I had a green thumb to grow a veggie garden. (had no luck thus far LOL).

It is also what another poster said...computer, video games, tv.

Listen to this...at my sons jr. high in phys ed the teacher has come up with a new thing so that the overweight kids do not need to run the mile that is required each year. He has a stepper and they have do so many steps during the quarter in order to make up for the mile. I honestly think it is ridiculous because it just caters to them I think. All they have to do is swing their arms around a little or walk in place bounce a little to make the pedometer (stepper) add a step. Sure it is exercise but it is easy exercise. I remember a kid in school many years ago being really sick of the trouble he had running the mile so he said he was going to diet so it would be easier for him the next year. He didnt want to be embarrased by the trouble he had running the mile so he decided to fix it. If you cater to them they won't have any motivation to lose the weight.

Americans aren't the only ones with the problem of obesity.
Australia has the same problem. It's the fast food and easy lifestyle we as a society have succumbed to. We have developed into a nation of couch potatoes with all our remote controls. We all need to exercise 30 mins a day at least. Even 3 sessions of 10mins is better than than doing no exercise.

Actually, I can show you a public park full of non-overweight people on just about any day of the week.
Our News-Media plays the same old tired video day after day and it's no wonder the world thinks we are all fat.
I suppose though that they do need to conjure some crisis to fill air-time 24/7.

1. Television, and more lately...
2. Video games
3. Computers.

The term "couch potato" comes from the U.S. In a large part of the U.S., television has been the only form of entertainment for decades. 1, 2 and 3 are all addictive.

Just wait, now that many countries have gone nonsmoking and this will lead to many people to stop smoking in other countries the tide will be turning. I give it a couple of years and you will see many more fat people in England and other contries. Mark my words you will see. I'm not saying that people should smoke but have noticed over the past so many years here in the US since the push for people to stop smoking that there are many more fat people.

Have you seen their portions of food?
A supersize drink has to be carried by two hands!
Our "large" drinks are the same as their small drinks!
My friend was over there not too long ago with her family. They ordered a pizza for 2, and they are a family of four and could not finish it!!!

Food is cheap and convenient. Also we have more and more appliances intended to make life easy. Everything has a remote control. And food is likely engineered to taste so good we can't resist it. We are eating out more, especially fast food, and it is bad for you. So much of what we eat is manufactured, full of fat and sugar.

We have adopted a sedentery lifestyle, laced with an overappreciation of food.

Cheap fast food. It's on every corner.
Vegetables and fruit are more expensive than fried fatty foods.

Most of our cities/towns rely on cars and public transportation. Very few people walk or bike anywhere.

Being overweight isn't as big of a stigma as it used to be as more and more people are becoming overweight. It's just more acceptable because of how widespread it is.

Healthy living and eating aren't an important part of our culture as much as having fun and instant gratification.
