You need to have the cooling system checked out. There are many things that can cause this. Some are: thermostat, fan clutch or electric fan, contamination plugging the radiator tubes, loose belt on water pump, dirt and bugs in radiator core, engine timing, leaking coolant, and a few more things.

Turning the a/c on will worsen the problem by putting more load on the engine; the gauge indicates engine temperature. If anything, turning the heat on full blast will help transfer some of the heat out of the engine. This is definitely not a permanent solution, but is good for driving it until you can get it fixed.

Turn the a/c on an see if the electric fan is running in the front of the engine on the radiator after warmed up.If not than don't use the a/c or sit in traffic till you get it repaired.Or will damage the engine. If fan is working than you have a cooling issue take to your repair shop???

Either your fan motor is not working or your thermostat is bad. Might check coolant level also
