I Have and grew up with a unique and "different" name. It is horrible! I am 40 now and still hate my name.... maybe not as much as I did when I was a teenager. But it totally sucks not to be able to get a key chain or mug with your name on it and CONSTANTLY have to correct people on the spelling or on how to pronounce it. It totally sucks having to explain your name and its origins to total strangers because its so freaking uncommon! It sucks for me and any one else who tries to spell or pronounce it. All I can say is i was born in the 60's and maybe my mom was high or couldn't spell or something.... I think it's awful to tag your kid with a name that is misspelled or so uncommon it seems as if you couldn't be bothered to find out how to spell it correctly before you hung it on some poor unsuspecting kid. You may think you are "gifting" them with a "unique" name but they may end up feeling you plagued them with a terrible experimental unheard of or even made up or misspelled name for life.... PLEASE consider this from a person who went through it from the child's perspective!

I have a 9 year old daughter named Miranda. I had a childhood friend named Miranda, and in the past few years I have met three other Mirandas. One I just recently learned that was her name, because she is called Midge, and one of the other two spells her name Myranda.

We are currently expecting Gwendalyn (middle name will be Rose). I personally only know of one other Gwendalyn-an acquaintance in our community, but my sister does have a friend with a daughter named Gwendalyn Rose (quite ironic).

Other girl names on our list for future use include Candace Kathryn (the only Candaces I know are celebrities, and there are not many of them with that name) and Malinda Darlene (I know of one person named Malinda).

We like names that are not common but not "weird", either-and names that fit both a little girl and the grown woman our little girl will one day be.

We also have a son named Randal, and his brother will be named Russel.

I think the best way to find a "different" name is to watch the credits at the end of a movie - you see names there that you would have never thought of

My daughter's name is Sydney. It is a family name, belonging first to my grandfather, an uncle, and the middle name of a couple of cousins, male and female. When I was pregnant someone told me that every Sydney they knew was beautiful...turns out to be true :)

Just my two cents.
