a rectangular shaped claymation character (greenish) from early television which was made very popular again by eddie murphy on saturday live in the late 70s with him dressed in a foam rectangle with him making off-color jokes as usual. the original claymation character was a dull early morning show of very young children before sesemee st. and murphy did an adult version of a dull show for little kids. note: murphy did make his version funny and was much talked about ever since. like debbi's question proves that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumbies
Gumbies are recurring characters in Monty Python's Flying Circus, characterized by a very distinctive appearance. If a name was listed for them, the surname given would always be "Gumby". Gumbies would wear handkerchiefs on their heads, small Hitler-like moustaches, spectacles, braces, knitted Tank Tops, a 1950s shirt rolled up to the elbows (without the detachable collar), and gumboots. They would usually hold their arms in an ape-like position, speak loudly and slowly, and pronounce words syllable by syllable.
