I plan to buy a front-load washer, the salesperson said that I should also get the base for $200. I wonder if I can get the washer without the base to save money. What's the base for? Should I get one?

The base is for people of normal height who don't want to get on their hands and knees to empty the machine.

If you have small children, or can rent/buy some, save the $200. Otherwise, your back will really appreciate it if you get the base. Wait a few months, and the ads will offer the base @ no additional cost.

I also own a front-loading washer & dryer and did not buy the bases - and have been very happy with that decision. Picture the washer in your home and if you want it higher. I didn't want mine up high. First, I think it would have made them look so massive in the space. Secondly, I fold clothes on top of the washer and I groom my little dog on top of the dryer. I also keep things on top of each appliance that I use in the laundry room - like hangers in a bin. I also put things on top of the W&D as I'm going in and out of the house. If the appliances were higher, the tops would virtually be unusable surfaces for me.

Instead of having the storage space the bases afford, I put one of those narrow racks along side of my dryer and it holds detergents and such.

I just purchased a front load washer. We didn't buy the base. I love my new washer.

I would think it would be to save your back from loading the thing down by your ankles. But that's a guess.

Can you bend over? ;->

From what I've seen, bases for front loaders are for people who can't bend over.
