Shhh is about the quietest sound that another can hear while hunting--ooooh and ahhhh are the others. Within feet they are lost in the natural sounds of a woodland.

If you've ever heard those little womb sounds thingies they sell to soothe newborns, it sounds exactly like shhh shhh shhh. Mothers almost instinctively say shhh shhh to babies to quiet and comfort them.

More urgently, shhh could be derived from "shut up" or "hush". Shut up would be the ruder expression.
