Just remember these kids are full of energy, love, and excitement. Make education fun. The first few days will set the tone for the rest of the year. I teach fifth grade and believe the first week is the most crucial.
Take care. God bless.

you want to get these little ones to trust you enough so that they can open up and 'give' themselves [mentally] to you.
So, if your school will allow this, why don't you just do some fun activities to ease them into school and to allow them to get use to you? You know - learn while you play thing. During this time you can gently but firmly set your standard and introduce the do's and the don'ts.
This will also enable you to get some insight into their personalities and abilities, supplying you with vital information as you plan your lessons and methods on an ongoing basis.

have the kids sit in a circle and say their name and their favorite ice cream flavor
than have them go around and try to repeat everyone who had said it before them

also have them create and decorate name tags with things that they like or are interested in that way you'll learn a bit about them and get to know them a bit quicker
