As we all know, the GTO started out as a sport package for this car from Pontiac in 1964, now, the question is, which car came with the GTO option package prior to the GTO becoming it's own vehicle in 1965?

Grand Trurismo Omologato is what the letters GTO stand for, please, do not give me that answer again.

The Plymouth Fury is a definite NEGATIVE!! The muscle car era DID NOT begin in the 50's, but the mid 60's . . . the Fury DID NOT start life as the first true muscle car, the muscle on the Fury was a package that changed the name to Fury III . . . thought I didn't know that, did you?

JOHN DELOREN made the GTO it was HIS idea!!

It would take a person who owns a fake GTO "above" (the new GTOs are built by the Aussies and have a chevy engine, it's an import with a chevy engine, how is that a Pontiac or even a GTO?) to say that.

Grand Turismo Omologato, or even Gas Tires Oil , is what GTO is. The first GTO was officially put out in late 1963 as a special version of the Tempest. However the first gen GTO would appear in 1964 as an option for the LeMans.

It started with a Tempest option but turned into a LeMans option.1966 was the first year for the GTO to be a full-fledged model, in 1972 it turned back into a LeMans option till it was killed in 1974.

Real GTOs have Pontiac Engines, you cant slap a 3M sticker on a import with a chevy engine and call it a GTO. The Pontiac GTO started the muscle car, it's an American Legend. Those who own the bastard import have NEVER been accepted in GTO circles, and never will be.

Hope this clears up your question.

Geez, guys, with all the info there is out there on the Net, can't someone get it right?

The GTO option was available on the Lemans, which was the high trim version of the Tempest, much like Catalina-Star Chief-Bonneville (I'm leaving out the Grand Prix because it was a special car that wasn't part of the heirarchy).

Additionally, the 1965 GTO was still an option on the Lemans; it didn't become its own model until 1966, and this lasted through 1971.

Ever compare the trim on a Tempest and a Lemans? The GTO shares the same with the Lemans. The Tempest has different taillights, for example. However, it's not cast in stone because if you look at the GTO's taillights from '65, they look like those on the Lemans but had a different amount of bars.

Le mans and the Tempest. Ask Jim Wangers the father of the GTO He is still alive and can still spin a good story about GM executives that were against Muscle cars.
It is true that Pontiac motored cars of the 60's and early seventys Are True Pontiac's. However when GM takes a Opel Cateria built in Australia places an LS-1 or LS-2 5.7 or 6.0 liter engine in it with Tremec 6speed and uses big enough APR brake rotors and calipers The New ones can corner and get down the 1/4 mile in under 13 seconds. And I get 25 miles a gallon on the highway. Modern Mustang Munching fun!

The GTO wasn't the first muscle car! Ever hear of a Plymouth Fury??? cross ram induction? Hemi? Yeah that's what I'm telling you, Chrysler started the muscle car era in the late 50's and I would say made some of the sweetest and fastest muscle cars ever. GTO's weren't bad don't get me wrong but they had a crappy frame and aside from a big *** V8 and some nice Ram air scoops I really don't see what the deal was. It's no Hemi Cuda or Daytona Charger that's for sure.

It was option package #382 on the Tempest Lemans that snuck a bigger engine (389 cubic inches) into the body for an extra $295.

sounds like my brother... we both had girls first, so he figured it was a competition to have a boy, they had their boy and i waited 3 years to have another baby, which was a girl. but i don't care i love my girls, i have 4 now hehe. they even compete about whose kid got potty trained first, and their daughter is older... to me that is stupid!!! they are really mad that our daughters are in the same grade because of the cut off where we live. they are trying to get their daughter to skip a grade. when i wanted to buy a van they ran out and bought one first, they bought a house first (i don't want to buy a house because we are in the navy) basically no matter what it is if we comment on buying something they run out and buy it first. we actually wanted to make a joke of it and come up with something stupid and outrageous to see if they will buy it first. not sure what to tell you other than to just stay out of it. who cares what they do, you know you are doing what is right for your family! if they want to live in a smaller house so they can buy more toys that will get broken and given away or thrown away more power to them! you just stay in your house with plenty of room and less mess!!!!
