The way this old wives tale got started is because cats like to sleep on warm objects and babies are warm. If a cat lays on a baby it can cause it to sufficate due to the weight of the animal on their chest and die. Before people realized what was really happening, they would assume that the cat had sucked the child's soul from it's body causing the death.

No cats can not suck the soul out of anyone. It is just a legend, but you still have to watch a cat or any animal for that matter around young children.

Catriona is completely right. Cats got the bad reputation because they would lay on the baby's chest or curl up next to the baby's face and sufficate it causing the baby to die. Crib death is a completely different thing though. SIDs is the reason there and doctors are finding more and more information on the cause of SIDs everyday. Cats are not a major cause of SIDs. As long as you watch your animals and your kids everything should be fine. Just teach the cat to stay out of the crib BEFORE a baby is born and prepare your other animals for a new baby before it arrives also.

Quick answer: No. They can asphyxiate a baby, though.

A police lieutenant friend of mine told me of a case he once investigated when he was a young police officer. It was a call of a house cat attempting to suck the 'soul' out of a baby. His investigation revealed that the cat was actually trying to suck milk from the baby's mouth. Milk is one of the common cat's favorite foods. The baby's mouth smelled of fresh milk and so the cat was just trying to find the milk, it was not maliciously trying to suck the baby's soul. Solution? The house cat became an outdoor cat until the baby matured.

True story.

no. its not possible. this superstition came from sids. which is unexplained baby death. and cats like milk. babies drink milk. so the cats tend to get into cribs and lick the milk from babies mouths. although this sounds gross its easier to do it when a baby is dead, a baby that is alive will shoo the cat away. so it happens that sometimes a parent would come across a cat with its mouth on a baby's and then the baby would be dead. in the old days when they didnt know about sids, like medieval times or thereabouts, they put what they thought was two and two together and came up with what they thought was a logical answer.

No, I don't. ITA with the gal who said it's pure coincidence, that the only threat a cat is to a baby is by suffication. Cats, in fact, are great for alignging your chakras, b/c theirs spin the opposite direction as ours.

no they cant...unless it turns out that it really isnt a cat but a soulhunter. but those are like a diamond in the rough...nearly impossible. but cats do increase psychic awareness and help develop psychic abilities, their chakras rotate opposit to ours, unlocking hidden talents by keeping our chakras perpetually aligned and cleansed. its a good idea to get a cat if you have a small child. but teach the child that the cat is to be respected and treated with the best of love and care, not picked on or tortured, and who knows...cats have amazing abilities and can choose to help or hinder anyone in their path.

It might happen that a female cat might try to nurse a baby but I doubt it. That would be a really dumb cat.
