Well... generally its hard to make a really strong GW build that does more than one thing well. So, doing strong spellcaster + strong melee is tough. This is true of most games, FWIW. It's usually called "min/maxing," meaning you maximize something to make you very powerful there, and by necessity minimize everything else.
The good thing about GW of course is that there are no permanent choices -- you just get back to town, switch your skills and attributes, even switch your 2nd profession, and go out and play a whole new way.
So, if you are playing an Elementalist, then pick the ONE thing you want to do well. If you want to do spellcasting, then usually Monk or Mesmer is a good 2nd profession, because you can back up strong spellcasting with healing or energy recovery. Or, if you want to do combat, then you could do E/Warrior, and use your elementalist powers to protect you while you bash on them with an fiery sword or shocking hammer or whatever.
Also, E/R might be good, for ranged damage -- maybe better, because Elementalist armor is pretty poor.
I recommend you go look at http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page
there are loads of builds there to consider.

For elementalist, I can't really recommend warrior. I've heard some people do some nice things with it, but I think the armor is way to weak for the elementalist to risk it.
Rangers are a pretty decent choice, since bows hit harder than wands and staffs you can attack with them while your mp recharges.
Personally I recommend combining caster with caster. E/Me is a popular choice for Mesmer's ablity to shut down other people's skils. E/Mo is good if you want to do some healing, while you won't heal as much per-spell as priamry monks, you can cast more often than they can thanks to energy storage. I've also heard some good things from E/N laying down curses then blasting with attack spells.
It is hard to do everything well really. So you might be better off focusing on one things and doing the absolute best you can be at it. I've played characters where my secondary was an after-thought. I didn't use the skills I just had it to have a secondary.

Dervish / warrior is a waste. the two are merely injury sellers ordinarily. Dervish mesmer is large while you're making plans on doing extremely some cooporative missions with pals. Dervish Monk IMO is the extra powerful of the three mixtures for the healing expertise... And the 1st poster right here would not understand crap relating to the activity and would not play it and has no reason to be commenting....He merely likes to shell out $15 according to month whether he performs or no longer....He additionally would not have the brains to think of for himself using fact he merely states his chum has it and says that's "gay". considering his chum says this that's going to be real. merely shows the low intelligence....

The world of MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) gaming can be quite daunting for newcomers. If you’ve never played such a gaming title in the past, you could be forgiven for feeling more than a little overawed. You’re suddenly surrounded by thousands of gamers, all of which seem to know exactly what to do, and precisely what’s going to need to be done to beat the game. So taking into account the cost of the initial purchase, plus the required monthly subscription, most seem happy to continue getting their multiplayer action on their home consoles.
But here comes Guild Wars from NCsoft. Now Guild Wars is quite a different beast from the likes of World of Warcraft or Everquest. While these games rely on monthly subscriptions to cover all kinds of costs, with Guild Wars you never pay anything more than the initial purchase in your local gaming emporium. Again, where the other big hitters in the genre require incredible numbers of hours put in, in order to get to any kind of decent in game level, Guild Wars requires you to display your intelligence and skill. With the in game level cap set at 20, which is reachable in quite speedy time, your own skill is required if your going to ‘beat’ the game.
