Well in the good old days in winter your right ......a food safe outside was good enough as long as it didnt freeze. And even then it could be kept alittle warmer to stop freezing.
The problem was summer....nothing kept for long atall....so along comes those huge blocks of ice in hopes of keeping the milk and butter for longer than a few hours.
Some parts of the world they still use the ice block system as insane as it is.
In another way you have a point...if we only purchased what we ate that meal and had no left overs......we maybe could do without the refrigerator. But what would you do when you wanted a cold drink in the middle of a hot summer night. Drive to the store??

To keep food from spoiling. Unless you are living in the north pole or south pole then you may need a warmer more then a refrigerator

Because we have lost the recipe for making yogurt under the saddles of our Mongolian war ponies. Pemmican is hard to make too, this kept Pioneers alive in the old days.

Meat spoils if it's kept at room temperature. Other foods last longer when kept cool.

Usually to keep stuff from spoiling, ever had a hot soda or warm milk and not by heating it up??... taste pretty bad.

because we need them to keep our food that we buy good, meat has to be cold.
and we need them to get ice and to keep frozen foods frozen.
an there is so many more reasons.
