Well in the good old days in winter your right ......a food safe outside was good enough as long as it didnt freeze. And even then it could be kept alittle warmer to stop freezing.
The problem was summer....nothing kept for long atall....so along comes those huge blocks of ice in hopes of keeping the milk and butter for longer than a few hours.
Some parts of the world they still use the ice block system as insane as it is.
In another way you have a point...if we only purchased what we ate that meal and had no left overs......we maybe could do without the refrigerator. But what would you do when you wanted a cold drink in the middle of a hot summer night. Drive to the store??

Because we have lost the recipe for making yogurt under the saddles of our Mongolian war ponies. Pemmican is hard to make too, this kept Pioneers alive in the old days.

Meat spoils if it's kept at room temperature. Other foods last longer when kept cool.
