It seems strange that in a country where how you speak and what school you attended means a likelihood of financial success, can call itself a democracy! I mean even now 75% of the cabinet went to Oxford or Cambridge. So it seems that if your ancester got lucky or backstabbed or stole a millenium ago, your only chance is the lottery or become a crime boss!!!
Bugger me we're all getting shafted.
ppose they'll want my kids to fight to keep them in clover too!

It is sad, isn't it? And the USA isn't much better about it, if at all.

I'm white....my family came here jan 1, 1702. In the 18 and 1900's they didn't get much further than a shack. They literally went by Christian values and money ISN"T everything. I don't know what happened. Things changed and it wasn't for the better. It's an out and out lie that people of a certain race get more than another....guess it depends if you want it all now at any cost...or if you beleive in something better. Or how easily you'll sell your soul..... I always thought you LEARNED from history....from what I see now...they didn't learn a thing.

Democracy has nothing to with what school people attended. Democracy is the way in which we elect officials to run the government. It has to do with having free elections.
You are confusing a political system with an economic system. Capitalism is why some people have more than others. Communism is the economic system in which everyone owns the same amount, which is nothing, or a piece of everything, depending on how you look at it.

To the American posters talking poorly informed crap above:

It has nothing to do with having a monarchy!! America is just the same. Don't tell me Paris Hilton "worked" for her money! Or GWB got his job without his daddy's help and influence!!!

In theory, the poorest man in Britain can become Prime Minster (most powerful job in Britain), just like in theory the poorest man from the roughest trailer park or ghetto in the US can become president. But in practice? Yeah right. No chance.

Having a Monarch is no different to having a President when it comes down to everyday life - it does not impact on how we can progress in our lives. Poverty and lack of opportunity for betterment do that.

I should think living under a monarchy would be more restricting than a democracy. Even with the USA's problems, I still say it's the greatest place to live in the world. True, some people who work hard all their lives, live paycheck to paycheck, and don't get rewarded for their hard work. But we have alot more liberty than other countries and the opportunity to at least try to make our own fortune. It took me a long time, but I am doing well. I am single, white and female. I think I had alot of opportunities, but it doesn't mean I didn't work hard. I am grateful.
P.S. God bless the miners trapped in Utah.

You're completely right. The problem we have is that us real people are busy running around trying to provide for our families while the new breed of "career" politicians become further and further isolated from us.

Maybe one of us will stop for a minute, stick up his/her head and start talking about the stuff we are not supposed to mention. They'll need strong backing though, because the vested interests will try very hard to slap them down again.

Unfortunately there is far too much of a divide between the working poor and the upper class. The rich get richer as the poor become poorer. Soon the only ones with a GOOD education will be the ones who can afford to send their children to private schools and they will be the ones who grow up to be the leaders, further dividing the classes.

When old Gordon Brown signs us up for the new European treaty we won't be able to govern ourselves. It will be the end of democracy. We are heading into deep and dangerous waters.

No just come up with a good idea, or get a good education but if you work hard you can make a good life for yourself. The politics of envy are a waste of breath.
