According to information extrapolated from 2006 US Census data; 1.07% of the US Population have an earned doctorate as their highest education. This includes the academic (PhD, EdD, DA, etc...) but not first professional (MD, JD, DO, DVM, etc.) doctorates.
1.07% of the population is 2,489,000 people. Just about 1 of every 100 people.
====================
From the same data, only 24% of the population of the US has a bachelor's degree or higher. This is all bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, first professionals, and doctorates.
That's less than 1 out of every 4 people.
====================
Women are now earning more degrees than men by a few percent.
