Crazy enough, I lived in government housing for 5 yrs while I went to college. I had a garbage disposal in my apartment and loved it. Its the only thing I really miss about living in the welfare apartments.
Now I live in a small town and have a new septic with an aeriation thing on it. Will I be able to attach a garbage disposal to my sink without problems or should I just get used to not having one?

I am the only person who lives here. The septic company gets paid to service my septic tank... which is the reason I quit flushing tampons down the toilet. A couple of strings got caught in the aeriation motor. Not cool!!! and very embarrasing.

Just adding my 2 cents....
You should find out how large your septic tank is too. Basically, the point is to only put things in there that will break down the easiest. Even look at the toilet paper you buy and NO you can't flush those flushable wipes.
We had one in our last house which and we never had issues with it and yes I had a garbage disposal. Basically, throw the big stuff left on the plate into the garbage (especially things that don't break down like egg shells and perhaps coffee grounds) and rinse the rest away into the garbage disposal. We had to pump our tank after 3 years. It depends on usage and size of tank. We have a family of 5 and do loads of laundry - so right there is just a lot of water going through the system - gotta be careful about that too. But really they are no headache. It cost between $200-300 to pump ours it was for a 4 bedroom house.

If your septic tank was installed correctly and you have it checked and maintained like you should then you may have a garbage disposal. We have lived here for twenty years with a garbage disposal and only had the tank cleaned one time about seven years ago and during the inspection, they said it was in excellent shape. You do have to be careful about what goes down any of the drains. Do not put grease down any of the drains and every now and then throw in a packet of yeast as it will help the process of breaking down the solids. Also do not throw anything down the drains or toilets that will not break down, such as cigarette butts, shells, plastic, or anything non biodegradable.

I have a garbage disposal on my septic system and have never had no problem out of it...you can use any garbage disposal on any septic system as long as you use something like rid x to help you septic tank and have it pumped out once every five years or so depending on how many people live in your home and how much food you put down the disposal...

It is not advisable with a septic tank as with flushing sanitary items and toilet paper into a septic system. The reason behind it is that the tank will be filled more quickly and will need to be emptied every year instead of every 3-5yrs. The compost is a wonderful idea. If you don't like that though, you can always get a large dog and feed it table scraps instead.

Yes, you can get one's specifically made for those on a septic tank. Those who say its not recommened or it cant be done do not know what their talking about.
Septic garbage disposals use a high speed motor to grind the waste into fine particles and also may have an additive that provides microorganisms into the waste stream to encourage breakdown in the septic tank.

Garbage disposals are not recommended for septic tanks. I asked when we had a septic put in. Not fair is it?

Why not check out vermiculture also. The compost pile is a great idea also. Vermiculture envolves using red worms to eat your vegetable trash. They eat your stuff and leave you with super compost for plants, lawns, etc.
I wouldn't suggest you use a garbage disposal with a septic tank.

they do make a disposal for septic tanks, but dont waste your money on it. the food you put into the disposal will create enzymes in the tank(enzymes are good for it) but dont over do it. when all else fails, get a dog.
