Hello; in order to setup a basic LAN, you'll need at least three computers (okay, you can get away with two, but in my opinion, two connected computers doesn't make a LAN), a router, and some cat 5 cable (network adaptors in each PC). For more information on this, check out the website, www.howstuffworks.com or www.howthingswork.com; but here's what you're looking for specifically: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htm I hope you find this informative, and keep these sites in mind, whenever you're curious about ANYTHING in the future!
Sincerely;
Marcos

First you need an Internet Service Provider.
Next You can connect direct to the Modem they furnished you.
This is one form of Local Area Network(LAN)
If you are using a Router and connect to a Modem then it becomes a Wide Area Network (WAN) and then when you connect to a port on the Router you are using a portion of the WAN and are now on the LAN.

By server do you mean that you have a physical server set up somewhere you are trying to connect to via router?
You should just need regular computers, and a router to create a local area network. Connect the computers to the router and configure them to use it's gateway/dns.

a LAN is a local area network between 2 or more PCs and has nothing to do with the internet. you can however connect a LAN to the inetrnet or WAN (wide area network) so is it problem connecting to the internet? is it wireless, or eithernet,and is it cable, DSL or dialup?

Maybe you have to sign in (if you established a password and account for your internet.) Or, maybe your server is outdated, has a virus(unlikely but still a possibility), or the phone wire that brings you internet is disconnected.
