I was biking along and out of nowhere, I saw this yellow bird with what looks like black wings zoom by me. I didn't get a close look, but I was wondering if anyone has heard of such a bird? It was a pretty bright yellow and it looked like it had black wings, but it might have just been a stripe or something. Anyone know what kind of bird this is?

If in northern North America, you probably saw a goldfinch. The males are BRIGHT yellow with black on the leading portion of the wing. They also have a black cap on the top of their head. The females are a much duller brown with very little yellow.

Type 'american goldfinch' into Yahoo! images and see if that looks like the culprit!

I didn't understand your description very well, but it sounds like it could have been a Mohave Shovel-nosed Snake. It does burrow into the earth. Totally harmless too. It wouldn't hurt you dog (assuming it isn't once of those tiny toy dogs). It's more afraid of the dog, it would rather run. The worst that could happen is a defensive strike. The only venomous snakes in california are the ones with rattles (and one uncommon water snake). I live in CA too =)

It could be quite a few things depending on where you live. If we knew that, we could help you more. My guess is it was a male American Goldfinch since that species is the most common.

An evening grosbeak, an indigo bunting, a bullock's oriole, a baltimore oriole, a yellow headed blackbird, a lesser goldfinch are all predominantly yellow north american birds. If you told us where you were we could narrow it down.

10:1 it was a goldfinch, assuming that you're in North America.

It could be a black-capped chickadee...it depends a bit on where you live. Black capped chickidees have a yellow body, black wings, and a black 'cap' on their head, hence the name. It could be many other birds though-it depends on where you are. Medowlarks have a similar description, as do many other birds.
