We usually leave from the San Fernando Valley by 10AM at the latest.
Traffic on the 101 slows down in areas where it goes from 3 to 2 lanes (i.e. around Carpenteria), from around Summerland through Santa Barbara (until you get past the airport), sometimes around Santa Maria (construction and the area is really growing). It's sometimes slow through the 5 cities area (Arroyo Grande through Pismo), but you're almost there.
Coming back, traffic through Santa Barbara continues to be slow, and from Ventura to Newbury Park can be stop and go.

The traffic in SB is only bad in the southbound direction at 4pm on Friday; I wouldn't worry about it.
You can go to KEYT.com for an idea how the traffic will be, too. Just follow it for a few nights to really have a clue.

actual, it would not remember too lots, because of the fact the freeways are infamous for site visitors besides. All joking aside, i would not advise utilising the city streets. you ought to land up getting lost in an area that even locals stay away from. The freeways, on the different hand, are extraordinarily risk-free. and that they are marked nicely. you're cautioned approximately interchanges nicely beforehand, and arrows teach you which of them lane to take. the section from West la by way of Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and Hollywood would not have lots in the way of expressway get entry to, so which you would be on the streets there. yet that is extraordinarily risk-free. The freeways have been outfitted because of the long distances between issues right here. as an occasion, that is 36 miles from Disneyland in Anaheim to prevalent city. that is approximately an hour by way of expressway, or approximately 3.5 hours by way of city streets. have relaxing! ------- observe to those that reported taking the streets and utilising the GPS: i ought to disagree with you strongly. GPS structures will attempt and path utilising the freeways as much as conceivable. And the GPS would not understand the risky neighborhoods, the two. Punch in LAX to Disneyland, and you ought to finally end up acceptable in the midst of Compton. no longer a stable concern. My suggestion continues to be to grit your tooth and stick to the freeways.
