I just got home and noticed the lights were on and I tried to turn the headlights on and then off, started the car back up and turned it off, pushed the brake repeatedly and still stuck, kinda weird. I have never had any problems with them before.

It's probably not the stop light switch, but a little plastic plug on the brake pedal bracket that the switch makes contact with. For some reason, Toyota puts a plastic plug in the pedal that the where the stop light switch makes contact with the brake pedal bracket. When this plastic plug inevitably breaks and falls out after 20 plus years, there is nothing to depress the switch and turn the brake lights off. I learned the hard way by buying a new stop light switch for $30 and discovering the real problem then . . . which I fixed by taping a thin piece of metal over the hole in the brake pedal bracket.

The first place to look is the brake light switch. It will be under the dash and the button will be pushing against the top of the pedal. Adjust the switch so that the button is pushing against the metal brake pedal. This should turn off the lights. If not, then either the switch is bad or you have a problem with the wiring and one of the wires has went to ground. It will cause your battery to run down and won't start tomorrow morning. Unhook the battery or fix it. good luck.

My Cold Feet has the correct answer but in cases where the jam nut will not hold the setting because the threads on the plastic brake switch are worn and causes the switch to tilt when the brake pedal is applied, I use a 1/8 to1/4 " thick steel pawl nut on each side at the adjustment bracket to lock the switch in position once adjusted to keep this from happening.

Have someone pull up on the brake pedal while you watch the brake lights. If they go off, the brake light switch needs adjusting. If not, replace the brake light switch. Remove the brake light fuse to turn the lights off.

it is more than likely a stuck/defective brake light switch. if the switch is shorted internally, or simply stuck in the on position, the brake lights will stay on. this switch is located on or near the brake pedal, and is generally not too difficult to change. try jiggling the brake pedal when the lights are on. pulling up slightly on the pedal will usually make the lights go out.

On the top of your brake pedal is a round plastic threaded switch with a couple wires coming out of it, when you push down on the pedal you can see it release a button on the bottom of it, when you let go of the pedal it moves up and pushes on the button, this action opens and closes the circuit. There is a jam nut on the threads that adjusts the switch up and down, you just need to loosen that nut and screw the switch in a bit so its not touching when the brake is released this circuit works with switch on or off, so you need to do this now or run battery down, or disconnect battery until tommorow.

There is a little switch under the dash connected to the brake pedal it looks like a small button, this could be stuck on or broken.

there's a switch located on the brake pedal arm that helps control these, the switch has either went bad or has slipped loose on it,if you can get to the small harness that connects to it ,remove it,and they will go off, either that or get the owners manual and find out which fuse controls them, and remove it,either way will work ,a new switch only cost around 5-8 bucks for it,and there not hard to install, good luck on it.
