Afterall, in order to show profit and get good grades on Wall Street, these entites could cut staff and equipment and leave Americans to defend their own homes and put out their own fires.

Its the American way, right?

The state government's first job is the security of its population. This includes police and fire departments. Education can be privatized because the public system is devoid of administrative accountability. Education is the parents' job.

Why not? Private companies have ALWAYS done a better job more efficiently and for far less than the government can and with less of the bureaucratic BS that comes with it. Many large cities and counties have had great success with privatization. Under Mayor Goldsmith, Indianapolis has reduced its annual budget by $31 million - and lowered the tax rate three times between 92-98. Philadelphia contracted out 46 activities from 92 -97. Phoenix put its solid waste operations out to bid, and Mecklenburg County, NC, has privatized everything from the management of a tennis complex to substance abuse recovery programs - totaling $85.7 million of annual services, or about 15 percent of its budget as in 1996. Privatization represents a lot of potential for small businesses, especially at the state and local levels. Private companies can not RIP THE TAXPAYERS OFF like the government does either. If they do--they lose their contract and you find a more suitable one. COMPETITION! You either produce a superior product or you lose.

Police departments are a little behind the curve in waste right now but Fire Departments are right up there. With firemen earning a good salary for 9 days a month of "work" that includes sleeping time, exersize, cooking, cleaning and all that it makes me think a private fire dept. could save us some serious money.

Public services like police and fire departments cannot be privatized because the purpose of government for which it was organized will be defeated.

In reality that would be very prudent in smaller towns, but not in Chicago,Phoenix, N.Y.N.Y , LA, and other large city's as they have way to much crime to handle in a large city, let alone fire Calls and other duties they have.
