my ex ruined a family heirloom, my dad's old heavy sheepskin jacket through years of wearing it whilst smoking, now it's smells gross. I'm not a big fan of the chemicals used in dry cleaning, so is there another way I can clean/treat it???

Turn it wrong side out and hang it in the full sun for a day. If it still smells, turn right side out a let hang in the sun for yet another day. The sun kills smells at the source and won't damage anything. Just remember to rub your coat down with saddle soap when you are finished so it doesn't dry out.

Since it takes well to the smell of smoke, why not stick with that? What I mean is: try inscence. Light some that you won't mind the smell of and keep it around your jacket. It will neutralize the scent of the nasty smoke and make it smell prettier.

I hope you like the idea, I managed to get the "old lady" smell out of my mattress by lighting inscence, now it smells like a temple ^_^. You can't get more all natural than that.

it's pretty tough to get rid of odors in sheepskin. you might try the insence idea from the other answerer. it could work but, if all else fails, you may have to bite the bullitt and take it to the cleaners. ask if there is a way to just use an odor remover without all the other chemicals.

you could buy some fabreze fabric freshener to spray into the lining and inside the arms of the coat.

an article listed below talks about cleaning sheepskin outerwear.. good luck.
