It is the generation of ozone, not the ozone itself, that protects us from UVB radiation. Ozone (O3) is being generated continuously by UVB radiation striking oxygen (O2) producing 2 free atoms of oxygen. If these atoms collide with other O2 molecule molecules, molecules of O3 are formed. After about 21 hours half of the newly formed O3 will kick off an O atom, reverting to O2, and the O atoms thus formed will combine with other O atoms to form O2. Eventually, with constant irradiation, an equilibrium condition is arrived at wherein the production of O3 matches the disintegration.

. What Helmut, above, is trying to say in his obnoxious "Top Contributor" way is that it won't happen. What he didn't say is that WE are producing more CO2 than our atmosphere can handle, so in 45 yrs, at the present rate, ozone will be 50% depleted. Then we DIE.
Info from the wiki site: "...Reductions of up to 70% in the ozone column observed in the austral (southern hemispheric) spring over Antarctica and first reported in 1985 (Farman et al 1985) are continuing.[4] Through the 1990s, total column ozone in September and October have continued to be 40–50% lower than pre-ozone-hole values." beware.
