Check your credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com. It truely is a free credit report from each of the three reporting companies. You get one per year free. You don't get a credit score, but you really don't need it in this case. The telephone number is on the reports. You can also alert them to a fraud on your account. Check the website. You will be glad you did.

You should be contacting the credit reporting agency. If you got your credit report online, there should be a place on the website that will tell you how to dispute a record. Once you file with the credit reporting agency, they will try to verify the record through Capitol One and subsequently will take that account off of your record. Capitol One cannot really do anything besides cancel the card. Even if there is no activity on the card right now, there may be at anytime. If there is activity then you need to make sure that it will not be reflected on your credit report.

If there is a problem on your credit report you need to raise it with the credit agency that you got the report from.

Give them all the information and an explanation as to why you dispute the entry.

They will then contact the company to resolve the matter.

The credit agency should confirm what action has been taken once the matter is resolved.

Dispute the entry with the credit bureau first. Chances are someone keyed in a number wrong and it will be easily corrected.

Sorry, didn't read correctly. You may have applied for a loan.

You can also call them and not hit any buttons and pretend you have a rotery phone. Also try hitting zero for their operator. Or select the stolen option. They will set you up with a new card if you want. You can decline.
