It's going to cost $600 to $900 to fix it but I don't have the $$ right now.

Is it ok to drive the car as long as I don't turn on the a/c? Am I hurting the engine by doing this?

Doesn't hurt anything so long as the compressor isn't turning on and off; have a shop unplug it and you will be fine.

You can pull the wires on the compressor clutch. That way the compressor will not turn on, no matter what setting you put the heating/cooling controls on. The AC will also come on when you turn on the defrosters too, to clear the humidity out of the air.

If you can't do this, then stop in at a full service gas station and have them do it. It will only take a second or two.
