They are about the same. If you have a yard sale you have a bunch of stuff outside on the lawn and that attracts people driving by. However if it rains you are canceled because everything could get wet and no one wants to stand around outside looking it over. If you have a garage sale you put the stuff in your garage and people come into that more-crowded place to see it and buy it. However if it rains you can keep going with the sale because there is a roof over your head.

A yard sale happens when somebody sells things in their yard. And a garage sale happens when somebody sells things in their garage.

garage sale is what's been in the garage a yard sell is whatever they don't need and they sell it in the front yard of their home.
