I have a 96 LE SC AWD with 149000 on the clock, however when turning
hard (like making a U turn its feels like its grinding or that
something is preventing the tires from turning smoothly) Also I have
excessive wear on the corners of my tires as well. Can any one tell me
what may be causing this? HELP!

Look inside the wheel-well to see if there isn't a worn area where the tire comes in contact with when turning. As your car gets older, the bushings and springs wear and sag, and the clearances reduce. You may also want to have the front end aligned so as to check the ball joints and other components of the suspension. This will also remedy the worn edge on the tires. Good luck and happy motoring.

with all wheel drive the transfer case unlocks the front end when you don't need AWD. when you make a u turm the computer thinks that our getting stuck because the wheels are not turning at same rate so it engages the front drive. but the grinding is coming from the front axel. in 4WD vehicle's the front wheels spin slower then the back. when you make a U turn you are forcing the front wheels to spin fater them they are allowed so its the grooves in the axel grinding. for a easy way to see if it mechanical look and see if anything is rubbing when you turn the wheels.

Check the wheel alignment and tire pressure; then check the wheel bearings

your car is out of alignment as far as your tires go. as far as the grinding i would say its time for brakes but you should have your front end suspension checked as it could could be something more serious!!!
