It's a French name, and I imagine attempts at trying to say it with the correct French pronunciation were hopeless...you'd have to roll an 'r' at the end and the whole bit. It would take much too long to say for those guys calling the plays during a game!

So it became "Farve."

Brett Favre Pronunciation

LJK is correct. Brett's last name is French. The best I can spell the French pronunciation is:

fahv - ruh

The "ruh" pronounced at the end would be from deep in your throat and sort of gargled out - like say "ruh" and gargling at the same time. If you could hear the name pronounced correctly in French, it actually does not sound too far from "farve".

It's his name; he can pronounce it however it wants.
I've known people with the same spelling of a name who each pronounced it their own way, and that's fine.
