My wife and I are doing a 3 night/4 day excursion. Day 1 Mandalay Bay. Day 2, Zion Park. Looking for the best place to go for day 3. Lake Mead? We enjoy hiking. Wouldn't mind finding a good hot spring since we've never been to one. What is best outside of Vegas?

The Mt Charleston - Toiyabe National Forest is my favorite. It's only a 36 mile drive up hwy 95. >But, then you have about 50 miles of scenic hwy that you can take through the park.

There are hiking trails, camping & picnic areas. It's incredible beautiful up there, and about 30 degrees cooler than LV.

IMHO Mt. Charleston(12K ft) is a much nicer area than Zion, and it's a much shorter drive. If you're going to take a long day trip or an overnighter the Grand Canyon is MUCH more impressive.

I prefer Arches NP in Utah by a wide margin over Zion NP - But then again I have family in Moab so maybe I'm "naturally" prejudiced.

If you do decide to go to Hoover Dam, expect long delays, they stop every car, and inspect every truck/van. Traffic is bumper to bumper for several miles. It's $7 to park on the NV side or you can drive across the dam and park for free on the AZ side(go figure) >A cruise on Lake Mead is fun, but a trip to the beach will more than likely just get you sand blasted(lots of sand and it's usually pretty windy, you figure it out) >IMO Mt Charleston is a much nicer day trip.

Red Rock Canyon - I refuse to go there anymore. I'm a nice guy and love to play tour guide for friends and family, but I draw the line at RRC, if they insist, they get the keys and directions.

We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years.

Later: "can76chaser" >gave you some good info, except I think the 1hr 45 from LV to Zion NP was a typo, it's at least an hour longer than that. It takes me right at 3 hours. I usually stop once to stretch the legs.

it easily doesnt take that long to get from la to vegas. it would desire to take approximately 5 hours straight away, yet you are able to continuously provide up on the way there to shop / eat or some thing. flying is merely too a lot of a difficulty and the risk-free practices could be exceedingly tight. flying is likewise quite costly in specific circumstances and if youre in trouble-free terms gonna be interior the air for like an hour, its like no longer even properly worth it. i say stress, yet despite bakes your cake, bypass forward and do despite.
