What can we do to prevent this from happening? My roomate and I go through about 2 bags of garbage a week. One will sit outside in a garbage can with a lid on top of a balcony...Unfortunately we have been having really hot, humid weather, which causes rotting and (gasp) flies and maggots. What can we do to prevent, or at least deter these disgusting bugs from using our bin as a love shack?

My trash bags sit outside in the alley in a garbage can waiting for pick-up day. Needless to say, it is open prey for all kinds of varmits including the ones with four legs and the ones that fly and crawl. I bought a spray bottle at the local Wally and filled it with ammonia. Spray the inside of the large outside bag with the ammonia as well as the smaller inside bags. You don't have to saturate the trash but at least give it a good dousing. Tie the bags good and tight to close them as well as the 32 gallon bag. Nothing wants to get into that stinking mess!

DO NOT sprinkle Sevin dust IN the can!!!.... the guy who has to lift and empty it in the truck will come after you with a baseball bat and HURT you!!!... that stuff is dangerous!!!...

tie up all trash tightly in plastic bags during the summer... if a fly can't smell it, it won't know the garbage is there..... agree about the new can and a tight-fitting lid.... also, don't throw out stuff that would draw flies.... until trash day!!.... I know it's not a usual thing to do, but we used to have to do this to survive without the maggots... food that is going to the trash, goes into a bucket with a tight lid, like a rubbermaid dealie... in the FREEZER, sealed , until trash day, when it's taken out, dropped into a plastic bag and then into the trash can at the curb..... easy, quick and no more bugs... just LABEL it PLAINLY!!!... *smile*............

Maybe you need a new garbage can and make sure that is has a tight fitting lid. We had a garbage can that always seemed to have bugs in it and then realized that it had a small hole on the bottom of the can (from dragging it to the road), got a new one and then we we're fine. You could also try a bug killer that also prevents bugs from coming back like Seven Dust. Just sprinkle in your can!

Do what I do, spray Raid in the garbage bag when you put it in the can. Respray every other day or when you put garbage in it. This keeps bugs away and prevents maggots. Be sure the lid is on tight.

I can give you three answers. First Bleach is good. Ants, flies,
cats, dogs, will leave garbage with the smell of bleach in it . alone. Next insects really hate red pepper. You could invest in a can and sprinkle the spot where the bag sits. Last just spray the garbage with a commercial bug spray. then tie it. Good luck.

Separate your garbage for starters. I have a garburator - it's great! Even with that I soak my meat wrappers/tray liners in cold water and then wring them out thoroughly before tossing them. In hot weather, I occasionally put them in the freezer until garbage day (which I hate doing... but...). Use empty cans with lids (like coffee cans) or ice cream buckets to store the organic wastes - like peels, etc. On garbage day you can drain the smelly liquid down the toilet or sink and double-bag the remainder before tossing in the can. If you don't have another can you can bleach the one you have and start again.

The best way to prevent this is to rinse all the meat trays and papers with soap and water ,and add a bit of bleach inside the bag.

bleach the can.

after it dries, every time you put someting into the can, spray it with pure ammonia, then put the lid back on... i don't think bugs like to breathe those fumes! and it should help cover up the trash odors

p.s. everything you put into the can should be put in closed bags first.

that is been my adventure that cats do no longer tear open trash luggage. we've had ferals in the section and that they have no longer torn open luggage. that's extra possibly that a raccoon or a opossum or great crow will tear open a trash bag.
