During that period of time there was a curious balance between two forces, that which felt that the church was meant to be a reflection of the kingdom of God, and therefore sought to raise the people to heaven by the use of architecture, and those that thought the church was meant to bring God down to the people and therefore used the church to be a receptacle, a fitting place, for God to meet his people.

The Gothic arch is the perfect emblem of the idea that it points to God and the stained glass window is the idea that God comes to his people.

The cathedrals, meanwhile, were very much a function of human ego, each being larger or taller than another. In England, Salisbury is the tallestt tower, Winchester the longest, York the largest, Westminster the talles interior, St. Alban's the longest nave, etc. Each wanted to be something that no other cathedral was. In the early days of the church in England it was all about relics and pilgrimages, with the two or three main sites being Glastonbury, the site of innumerable relics and the founding of the church in England, Winchester and St. Swiven's and and Canterbury. Later however, when the church in Glastonbury burned, new ideas came to the forefront.

I am pretty sure it is in your Text book or your teacher wants you to go to a library and research on the topic. This is the time to learn how to write a paper. If you work hard now, you will have easy time in college.
If you do not understand the question, ask your teacher. He/she would not mind explaining you and you won't look dumb. This is how you learn. You ask and answers are given to you. Go to a library and ask someone there to help you with it. They are very good at it.
