Had the same problem.... First, clear the message by:
Turn on power
Press and hold Stop; Maintenance: Power
Hold for 12 secs, job done.
Now, on the back of the printer there is a small trapdoor. Open this trap, look in and down for a wedge shaped bit of white wadding, remove wadding. Look closer, you will see a small plastic tube. Carefully extricate this, lead it out of the trapdoor. Get a small plastic bottle, drill a 5 mm hole about 2 inches up in the bottle, ease the plastic pipe in. You now have a waste ink bottle to empty, instead of filling up your waste pads. If needed, later, reset the counter as above.

The maintenance required message will be due to the maximum value being reached on the waste ink counter.
Basically they have a big sponge (well several) in the base of the printer, when the printer cleans itself or you run a head clean it does this by spraying ink through the printhead which ends up in the sponge in the base.
A counter decides when the pads should be full and will stop you from printing to prevent you taking Epson to court because your printer leaked ink all over your nice clean carpet.
You can reset the counter with the software in the post above (epson ssc utility), but first open the little trapdoor on the back to check how soaked the wastepads are.
You will find that if you are using non-epson ink that you will get this error message prematurely due to the printer using more ink to clean itself (less or no cleaning fluid is mixed in the compatible ink). However if you have used the cheaper ink you will find as it is alot thinner it will evaporate faster and leave you with drier pads.

You can download a fix for this problem or send printer back to Epson. If you run the fix you have to take out the cotton wadding and wash the surplus ink out of it. Dry it and repack it in the printer, Run the fix and it's reset to zero. I have it on a disc somewhere but you would be quicker downloading it.

I even have had very stable success with HP ink, even sitting idle over months it would not look to dry out. i desire to advise which you keep away from Epson!! I had huge problems with an Epson Stylus photograph printer... curiously because of the fact we did no longer use it for a whilst, the ink dried out... yet no longer in the cartridge, someplace in the works of the printer. they are designed in a distinctive way than, say an HP and between the adult men at Staples says that Epson is time-venerated for ink issues because of the fact of it. This printer is next to ineffective now except we can get it wiped sparkling someplace.

I think you can run a maintenance print from your PC to "prove" the maintenance.
Not entirely sure - my faithful old Epson is in storage but I think that's how I got around that!

See if this programme will help you. It's Epson SSC Service Utility.

Try unplugging power from printer and leaving it unplugged for 24 hours....this will usually clear anything held in its memory
