If it has your name, then I would bet you will get a call soon. The call will be to the effect, "So sorry for the mistake. Go ahead and cash it, but send us 80% of the amount and keep the rest for your inconvinience". The check from them will then bounce, but yours to them probably won't.

If it does not have your name, return it to them if you are feeling nice or pitch it in the bin if you are not.

I like the "frame it" idea too.

All kinds of places make mistakes. This could be a mistake, albeit an expensive one. Was the check made out to you personally?

There could be some kind of scam going on, where someone has the same name as you.

I suggest you do the following:

1. Make phtotocpies of the check (both front and back) and the envelope it came in.

2. Put the check and envelope it came in in a bank safety depostit box. Do not cash it. However, carefully note if it expires after some time period (like 90 days) and if there is something on the check saying that it is FOR something, like some service or product.

3. Take the photocopy to the police and make a statement what you did ... you put the check in safe place, you did not deposit it.

What you want from the police is to know if it is Ok for you to cash this "gift." In some jurisdictions if a company makes a mistake and sends some person something in error, they get to keep it, but that might not be every place in the world.

4. Get on the Internet & try to search for any information about the company that sent you the check. Contact the Better Business Bureau for info about them.

5. Open a bank account at a bank other than the one where you do most of your banking business, and deposit the check there.

Suppose you have your money in 1st national bank of your town, and maybe a savings account or credit card with 2nd state savings & loan ... find some OTHER bank in town ... open an account there, and deposit the check there.

If it is some kind of scam to find out about the bank where you do business, your assets are protected.

If the check is found to be fraudulent, and the bank freezes the account because of it, your assets in other banks are safe.

do not cash this check, I see this kind of thing all the time working for a bank. It will probably bounce and you will be investigated for fraud recieve fees then the person who made the check out will have your account information. Look on the Better Business Bureau website to find more about the company. Generaly people know when they are going to get a check for 82,500 dollars and if you didn't know you were going to get it then it probably isn't for real.

Call the bank that it came from and ask them if it is a valid check and not a fraudulent check before you even think of cashing it. They should also be able to tell you where it came from by the numbers they will ask for on the check. If you were not expecting a check and you do not know where it came from it could very well be fraudulent.

Hmm, nasty piece of work. If you cash the check, it will bounce (which costs you money. Plus whoever sent it will now know your bank account number since it's been encoded on the check and the check returned to them.

I'd frame it and put it on the wall.
