Children under age 10 probably aren't old enough to understand all the things in Harry Potter.
I started the first one at age 8 and even though I thought I understood it, I didn't grasp the concepts of death and racism and destruction until I was 11.
So I'd say about 11 or 12, or a mature 10 year old.

Probably no younger than 8 since the reading level for the books starts to get harder as the books progress. But really it will depend on the individual child and his or her reading level and comprehension. Some people have suggested that children should be the same age as Harry when they read the books (the first couple of books anyway). I know I started reading them when the first one came out when I was 10.

I think the first book can be read about 11 -12 but the last couple of books I would say 13-14.

I found so good information on the site listed below.

"Consider your child's age and maturity level. The Harry Potter books seem to be designed primarily for the 9-to-12 age group, although many younger children also enjoy them, and many adults absolutely love them."

The publisher's decided to target the 9-12 year old age group.

I started when I was 7, but only because that's when I could read it on my own. I think you could read it to a child when they're 6. The first one's aren't as dark as the last ones and so you grow up with them. You get more muture, as the books do. That's one reason why they're so amazing!

The first and second book are ok to start reading when ever they can, but starting at the third book it gets a little dark nd they shouldn't be reading it until third grade.

I think it depends on your child's reading level. All 3 of my children have been reading them and they are 7, 9 and 16. I have been reading them and I am 40.
