When people say cats have nine lives they mean that cats are good at escaping death. When people say curiosity killed the cat it's just an expression meaning you shouln't be too curious, because you might get killed.

I think you answered your own question. That's just it the cat will not "learn" the first time much less the eight or ninth time, you might say "curiosity killed the cat."

Cats are curious by nature and get into some very tight spots. They don't actually get killed 9 times, they just come very, very close so they get to try again.
