Communication using a computer is greatly degraded compared to face-to-face. There are no many non-verbal cues (body language) plus the sound and visual quality is better face to face vs video or audio over a phone or computer line (not to mention being in 3D).

I have often wondered if it costs businesses money using Net meeting, phone, and email vs face to face. I think you can make a tangible case for saving money with computer tech due to travel costs, etc but there are intangible losses due to the degradation in communications that are harder to quantify

There are so many misconceptions and mis-communications, when people communicate using computers, or any form of technology for that matter. One must take into consideration that everyone responds to things differently and may misconceive certain things. For example, a :"sensitive" person whom is being communicated through a computer by her boss may take a certain message the wrong way depending how it is retrieved.

Example #1: Her boss sends her an email saying, "I NEED THOSE FILES IN BY THE END OF YOUR SHIFT".

This person may perceive the message as coming off as if he is yelling at her not only by the all caps font but because he kept it short and simple, which might leave her wondering why he's "yelling" at her or being rude.

vs.

Example #2: the boss approaches her face to face to communicate with her and let her know that he needs the files by the end of her shift. It's more of a positive way of communicating with someone rather than through computer or modern technology. When people communicate in person, it's more of a better understand on how that person is coming off to them, whether it's friendly or rude. Face to face communication gives one a change to read the other person's body language and tone of voice, which is a huge factor when one communicates with one another.

-When using computers, you can put your message "out there" faster than you could face to face. For example, someone in New York would need to travel 5 hours (by airplane) to talk to someone in California. Even if you were in proximity to each other, many people can type faster than they can write.
-When using computers, you can spend time processing your answer so that it's as good as it can be. (Of course, many people don't do this...but at least it's possible.) You can edit it a few times before passing it to the other person.

-When you're not face to face, you have no visual cues to help improve communication. For example, you can't see if someone is confused, but just agreeing with you.
-When you can't hear the person, you get no auditory cues. For example, sarcasm never seems to work when reading text. That's why emoticons were created.

When using computers, all you have are the words in front of you, and your interpretation of them. This is why just about EVERYONE has a story about someone who "didn't take what I wrote in the way I meant it."

The computer is like alcohol or drugs it removes inhibitions and allows the user to say things that they would never say face to face.

The computer removes the human need for human contact and is creating a generation of people who are computer literate and people dumb. They can interact on the computer with people but not face to face.

There is much more anonymity in computer communication. Also when communicating through written or typed more thought can be put into conveying our thoughts.
I think in face to face communication there is much more emotion involved, such as gestures and eye contact.

obviously with computer it's more straightforward. face to face is much more personal since you can hear the tone in which the dialogue is said and the body language and face expressions. i prefer face to face for that reason. with computer you don't even know what the person is really thinking..

Personal or live interactions of course enable us to see what the other party's emotions is through facial expression. Other means of telecommunications are the upgrade version of a personal communication such as the case with internet fax software to make interaction much easier.

Online communication doesn't give you the chance to interpret body language, intonation of voice and facial expression. ......the sense of urgency, need or compassion isn't conveyed with any great clarity.

.....and if you accidentally say something you shouldn't...a click of a button stops you from correcting your mistakes by explaining yourself.

On the other hand, people can feel more at ease by communicating online, they feel less inhibited and may find themselves saying things they wouldn't have the courage to, face to face.

Its easier to chat to people on the net yhey have no pre concieved ideas on who you are and what you are about, how you say certain things or how you look at them.
On the other hand we all know that there are some nuts out there who enjoy fooling people, telling lies about their age, wether their male of female and so on,to get their kicks.
There is a lot to be said for and against both.

on the computer you can't see facial expressions ot hear the tone of voice spomeone is using! so face to face is better.
when all you read are typed words, you can't tell any of that unless of corse it's all caps, then it's said to be yelling.I used to type in all caps just cause I thought it was easier to read, then someone told me that it semmed as if I was yelling all the time.
