You may have sheared the flywheel key by hitting something or possibly when it was assembled the flywheel was never torqued to the right pressure and after running it has loosened and sheared the key. Either way that causes the timing to be off and will cause the motor to kick and backfire. You or a technician need to remove the flywheel remove the sheared key and replace it with a new one. Then torque it to the correct specs. with a torque wrench. On a small Briggs or a Tecumseh motor approx. 50 foot lbs will be in the right range. Check a service manual out at the library for exact specs to prevent a repeat problem.

There is a ratchet type mechanism that is supposed to disconnect the pull-cord mechanism from the engine when the engine starts.
It's probably just gummed up, or there may be a broken spring in there.
Fix it, or get it fixed. It is dangerous to try to use the mower in that condition, (as you found out).

Check the spark plug to see if that is causing hard starting.

Gently pull the cord a couple of times to make sure the slack is out, then pull it to start, LET GO!! when you reach the end.

It could be vapor lock. Let it rest for a moment. Check and see the blade is not impaired with anything like rope or kudzu. Remove the spark plug before trying to remove anything. The try again. PS Check the oil it may have locked up if there is no oil.

It might be possible that the flywheel key is partially sheared and the spark plug is firing before the piston gets to top dead center. The key is fairly soft and is designed to allow it to shear if an obstruction is hit by the blade so the crank shaft isn't ruined. You have to remove the fly wheel to see if this is the case.
