Kings Disease = gout, very common in the 18th century and extremely common now due to the fact so many of us over self indulge.

This is the illness which kills Kings dead, historically thought to be the case. In reallity, anyone can die of this.

Buy only from an ethical registered breeder who has health certificates for the sire and dam. Cavaliers can carry heart problems with Mitral Valve Disease. My two Cavs came from health tested parents and at 5 1/2yo and 4 1/2 yo respectively, neither of my dogs have heart issues or any other health problems. Their parents and grand parents are still alive and well. Syringomyelia is a problem that occurs not only in Cavaliers, it can occur in other breeds and cross breeds and also in humans. The only way to discover if a dog suffers with an 'as yet' undetected Syringomyelia is to MRI the parents. Ethical registered breeders are now MRI'ing their breeding stock in an effort to eliminate or at least minimise the risk of Syringomyelia. If you by a cheap Cavalier from a back yard breeder who has no health certificates for their breeding stock you are taking a risk. Health testing is expensive and the price of a well bred Cavalier will reflect that.

Hello No 23,
There was a couple of Kings of England that succumbed to thrombosis in the 20th century, and they probably had a touch of the Gout too, which is all that Port wine they are 'forced' to drink. Hope this helps you out, Tony M

The Disease Of Kings - Gout.

It has been referred to, maybe a touch inaccurately, as "The disease of kings and the king of diseases."

Gout is essentially a form of rheumatic arthritis characterized by recurrent episodes of joint inflammation.
The pain and swelling of gout are caused by uric acid crystals that deposit in some joints, most notably the big toe, but the disease can also strike the knee, ankle, foot, hand, wrist and elbow.

The only complaint I know affecting a thumb (and/or fingers) is a "trigger thumb" which is caused by inflammation of the fibrous sheath that encloses the tendon of the affected digit, accompanied by localized swelling of the tendon.
It actually locks the finger or thumb in a bent position.
The only other thing I can think of is "kings evil" which was once a name used for scrofula.
Hopefully, a medical person will pick up your question and be able to answer it.

Scrofula, or tuburculosis means Kings evil.
