You didn't indicate how old you are, which makes a difference. If you are in school, there are many schools with ESL (English as Second Language) classes that can help you. Most universities also offer ESL classes and there are students who, through work study or other program, offer tutoring assistance. This I know because I participated in one several years ago as a tutor. You could call the Board of Education in your district (you can find out what district you're in by going online to your city's or state's website, or by calling your local mayor's office. If they don't know the answer, they can point you in the right direction).

Aside from schools and universities, there are also many outside agencies that offer ESL classes. I would start with calling some of the agencies such as the Cabinet for Human Services, charities that deal with refugees, and also some local churches. And the yellow pages of the phone book can also be a resource. If you don't, for whatever reason, want to contact local officials, churches and charity organizations are probably your best bet.

Most of the above organizations will or probably will provide ESL classes for free. There are probably other organizations that charge a fee. But I feel that if you truly want to learn English, this is the way to start a formal education in the language.

My second suggestion, in addition to the above, is to READ books in English. The classics, in particular. English in America is riddled with slang, so reading English literature without much slang I think is the best way to begin. You can add slang to your vocabulary as you go and as you feel comfortable in your understanding.

My third suggestion is to acquire an English dictionary and a book of simple grammar and carry them with you. (Pocket editions are good, but the print is small, so again, this depends on your age).

Oh, and last but not least, SPEAK the language as much as possible, even if you're unsure of what you're saying. Ask people to correct you if you're wrong (although keep in mind that many people, even those born here, don't always speak English well) and just listen to other people talk (again, be selective) and how they form their sentences, etc. But practice makes perfect, so speak English as much as possible.

If I think of anything else, I will come back.

Good luck!

My advice to a Thai friend of mine who asked the same question is:

(1) Watch English movies --- and enjoy it!
(2) Read --- start with children's books if you have to!
(3) Listen --- to people's conversation and try to understand what they are saying...
(4) Talk --- express yourself!!! This sharpens your conversational skills and gives you the opportunity to practice what you learn from points 1-3 above.

About speaking English as soon as you can, well, my answer to that is: YOU CAN'T. It takes a while to absorb the English language but you can be better at it if you PRACTICE!

Hope this helps.

Well English is not easy to learn, but there are all kinds of opportunities...free ones...to do so. Adult school offers ESL classes to do just that. Also parks, and churches, etc. often offer classes.....I used to teach one at a senior center and people came and sat in on them....you are usually welcomed anytime. So just ask around ...go to City Hall where you live, the library, etc. and someone will tell you how. And good for you....wish more people would make the effort!

You can buy Rosetta stone. If you do it every day then you could learn it pretty fast. You could also buy a book on it in whatever language that you speak. Hope that that helps. = >
