Okay, I'm pretty scrawny and have decided to try weight training to get some muscle. I have a set of weights I have bought for arms and legs, 35lb/45lb for the former, 15lb for the latter. I know nothing about weight training. How should I start?

Jack B.,

I ran into this website that has, in my opinion, some very useful information about weight training.
Of particular note is the section for 'hard-gainers'. It includes both work-out and the oft-ignored dietary advice.
It even has a free down-loadable e-book (PDF, 3MB) titled "Bulking For Ectomorphs: So You Think You're A Hardgainer?"

Here's a link, if you're interested:

I have been weight training since I was in track-and-field in high school (well over 20 years).
If you'd like some personal advice on this subject, please feel free to e-mail me and I'll be more than happy to help you if I can...

Ok Jack. We can whip that scrawny frame into shape in no time. Obviously you are concerned that your legs are weaker than your arms... so we have better start there I think.. build this handsom man from the ground up....

Four times a week you will need to do 60 repetitions of each of the following exercises .. taking a drink and lil rest for 1 minute every 15 reps... stick some weight in each hand to make it difficult and put your John Macinroe head band on:

Squats
lunges,
stiff leg deadlifts
bent over rows
upright rows.

Then we want to see 80 push ups... you can do these in batches of 20 with a minute rest in between... and you can drop back to doing chick pushups (on your knees) if you do at least the first 3 on your toes... do as many on your toes as possible Jack... it gets easier.

Crunches.. we want 80 of them too... in batches of 20 with 2 minutes rest in between each batch.

So next summer are you going to be looking for some aussiebum swimwear?

You're handsome even if you are a little scrawny (your words, not mine).
I know very little about weight training but I have one bit of advice that I'd like to share with you. I often go to the gym and see alot of men who work out too much the top half and not enough the bottom half (which is more difficult incidently). It can look strange when men have big muscular arms and skinny little legs !
There's alot of information on the internet about weight training too.

Go to a gym and talk to the instructors.. they will advise you on the best exercises and techniques.

Alternatively go to a good book store/library and read up about weight training exercises.

Most importantly also see your doctor before you start any exercise program.

What I did was I went to a personal trainer for a month. I got into the habit and learned all of the techniques and am able to lift and tone on my own now. My boyfriend helps me with squats though. :)
