The latest example of socialism advancing under the cover of environmentalism reaches us from, suprisingly enough, Texas, which will soon offer $3,500 vouchers to drivers of modest means to replace pre-1996 vehicles.

Older cars pollute more. According to global warming theology, each old car on the road could bring our planet a few fractions of a millisecond closer to apocalyptic doom.

Doom could be staved off a little longer if people drive environmentally ruinous yet politically correct hybrids, which is why you only get $3,000 if you replace your old car with a non-hybrid.

The Houston Comical reports that the "program is voluntary." That means you don't have to buy a new car, or take the free money if you do.

However, what is not noted is that it doesn't mean you the taxpayer don't have to provide the "free money", via redistribution come April 15.

I agree, In that if this program were to work on a voluntary basis, how long would it be before is became mandatory, for everyone to "turn in" their cars, which are not hybrids? If it is my money, i should be able to buy all the gas i want, and drive what i want.. then again, if cars where mandatory to turn in, how long would it be before "other" things were demanded of us?

Socialism seems to be the accusation du jour (semaine, mois, or année?)

In this case, it doesn't seem like there's too much that is hidden, is there? And there might be other advantages to encouraging new car purchases, such as improved driver safety, and lower gasoline consumption (which should lower prices for everyone,) etc.

Anyways, I don't think it's wise to fear every ides that comes down the pike, just because it could be connected with "Socialism." It's kind of paranoid, or hysterical or something.

Typical Republican......so quick to use the word socialism. I bet you say communist a lot too.

There comes a time when we need to work together to make the place better. Call it socialism, call it whatever you want. Stop being so damn greedy.

I bet if it was somebody from your side that was the big global warming advocate your would be all for the governments involvement in improving our environment. Typical Republican. Party lines loyalist.

You know nothing.

I beg to differ with you. It is not socialism advancing in the guise of environmentalism....it is a form of a new religion, that is in factually and wholly bent on every one on the face of Earth bowing down to it in the name of Environmentalism. The homage of which this new religion will extract will be nothing short of billions of lives at the alter of its so called saving the Planet and damming the humans.

Yawwwn. Considering hybrids would drive the auto industry back into the black instead of the financial red that it has been in for the last 6 years, I'd say your argument is not only shrill and reactionary but it is economically shortsighted and unimaginative.
So you don't mind that billions of dollars a year are going to the oil industry in the form of subsidies and grants from the federal government. Meaning that you pay for your gas about 3 times every time you fill your tank up. I'm sure you don't mind making those oil/war profiteers richer do you. Where'd you get your economics degree, off ebay?

Are you from Houston? The Chronicle has to be the worst paper in all of America. I can't believe my home state would do this. Why haven't I heard about it? I don't listen to talk radio and I canceled my subscription to The Chronicle after their bias interfered with the reporting of my friend's death in Iraq.

I can see the dollar signs in the eyes of the car salesmen around the Lone Star State right now. Here is a chance to jack up prices and take free money from the government.

I live in Ca and I turned in my old car to a scrap yard when it would not pass smog. I got $1000. from the state.

While I agree with you in principle, I think there are far worse wasteful programs in govt. I also think environmentalism is more akin to a religion than socialism - which may be compared to a religion as well.

Yes get McCarthy back to deal with all those Evangelical Christian groups and those pentagon leaders that have realized how dangerous a threat Global Warming presents.

How about this: aside from global warming, cars that pollute less allow one to breathe more oxygen and less burnt fossils.

Quit crying about your taxes. You drive on roads. You go to libraries and schools. You are protected by the military. None of that is free.
