First, don't hang it from a tree, hang it on the porch soffit. If you still have problems, take a jar lid, punch a small hole, thread the string or wire, whatever you use to hang the feeder. Put a small amount of sealer, around the wire or string where it goes through the jar lid. Hang it back up and fill the jar lid with water. The ants will not go through the water to get to the hanger to climb down into the feeder.

the best thing which you can do is get a small dixie cup and put it right side up (like you were going to drink from it). If your feeder just has a "stick" type of attachemnt on the top part, pierce the bottom of the cup with the "metal stick" on the hanger. Seal where the cup meets the metal stick in the bottom ( i suggest heavy duty electrical tape covered in colored duct tape to make it pretty). a waterwroof sealant wouls also work ( i would imagine). Then, fill the cup with water. As the ants come down the hanger they will go directly into the cup of water and drown! I can send a picture of exactly what I mean if my directions are a little confusing!

The BEST way to prevent this is to simply apply a one inch long coating of ball bearing grease to the string or metal hanger. Ants will not cross the barrier. You can hang it from anywhere you would like. :o)
