I just started making Jewelery. All you need as far as tools are a pair of needle nosed pliers, round nosed pliers, flat crimping pliers. You can find these at any hardware store or craft store (in kits with everthing and extras to get you started). You'll need to do some reading about what guage wires will work for your projects. You will also need crimping beads to hold wires and beads in place. Then ofcourse an assortment of beads. I made a dangle braclet which the patteren can be found on www.DIYnet.com under the Carol Duvall Show. Its a very easy braclet to start with just look up "dangle bracelt" under the search and look for her show. All the materials can be found in your local crafts stores but I'm in the US and I don't know what stores you have. Good luck! They are a pain to make, but they are pretty and very easy.

Try http://www.kernowcraft.co.uk/ they are very good and you will get most of what you need to start making jewelry. As to what you need is much Dependant on the sort of jewelry making you want to do. If you want to do your own silver jewelry making from scratch you will need more that if you are going to do bead work type jewelry. If you do the latter you should be able to learn from a book quite easily but if you want to do silver smithing I would suggest you take a class. You will then learn what are the best tools to get. However, the basic things you would need are a set of pliers flat, round, snip and ring bending. You will also need a mallet, try square, scribber, scraper, burnisher, needle files, piercing saw frame, bench pin & ring clamp. There are many more I could add to this because if you break out on you own and don't have access to the classes equipment.

For an inexpensive start up, go to Walmart, or your local department store, or craft store. Buy a layout board, $4-$6, depending on the size. Buy a pair of cone shaped pliers, a wire cutter with the blade at the edge, and a crimper. These tools come in kits, in mini and full sizes, and singley. Shop and compare. Walmart also has inexpensive beads and findings to practice with, so you do not have a mint invested if you decide you don't like to bead. I don't think you have Walmart in the UK, but this is also for anyone else reading this, too.Your local discount department store might be cheaper than a craft store, too.
String with Beadalon, or a similar product, the wires are twisted into strands, making them stonger than just plain wire. It might be pricier than plain single strand wire, but it lasts longer, and hasn't broken in any of my neckaces yet. It comes on rolls, and in gold, black, silver, and copper colors. Don't use wire, it breaks. Nylon cord is ok for weaving and some designs, but not for everything. Elastic is great for bracelets, not so much for neclaces.
Then buy the findings. You will need clasps, crimp beads, and earring pieces that go into your ear, and whatever you need to make a dangle off of it.. All come in base metals and silver and gold, and the base metals come in packages that are not expensive. I love the clasps that are a circle, and bar. They are so easy to hook and unhook while you have them on, and makes putting a bracelet on a joy, rather than a chore. I paid a total of $12 for my tools, and $4 for my first small layout board. I can get a small bag of clasps on sale for a buck or two, same for crimp beads, and earings. It is the beads themselves that can cost big bucks, they make expensive hand blown ones, and sell semi-precious stones, I drool over one kind at the local expensive bead shop, they are $35 bucks for a 6-inch strand. But, compare that to upscale department store name brand jewelry, and it is a bargain.
Cheap neat idea: my friend haunts yard sales, and buys old jewelry, and remakes and updates it. She went to one, and the lady was tired of the jewelry busines, and was selling out. The lady put findings, beads, partially made pieces into bags, and sold them for $5 apiece. My friend bought them, and said she had died and gone to heaven, with all the different stuff.
I buy earing findings, and 3 inch pins without a point [they come in bags in the jewelry department]. I load the pin with the beads I want, and twist the non-head end around the loop on the earing, and stick the end of the pin into the whole of the last bead, making a loop around the loop of the earing. .. Instant dangle earing, and easy to do, and cheap to make. I use the cone pliers to help me with the loop.
The answerer above did a great job telling you everything you might need. I started small, and have been collecting different beads, clasps, the gizmo that you can suspend a pendant from a neckalace, all kinds of things.
Other cheap tricks: go check out the current styles of jewelry at the mall, and go duplicate it yourself. Buy cheap onsale jewelry from the discount department store, cut it apart, and use the beads and pendants together or with other things, to make jewelry.
Try Michals.com, they have video how to, and other sites do too. I typed in words to the effect of jewelry making how to, and got lots of info.
