The EGR valve may be binding up or stuck and is not moving. It may give you a rough idle. The repair shouldn't be too bad. They will replace the valve.

EGR is simply Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
You can get it fixed at the dealer, or any competent mechanic. Yes, it can cause problems, some of them serious. As to cost, it would depend on where the failure is, what if any parts need to be replaced, and various other factors.
See http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/nov97/gas.htm for an overview of the system.

it is not a big deal actually. I have the same problem but never had the intention to fix it. Egr valve is the valve where your motor takes the unburned gas and take it back to the motor. Since the exhaust gas is hot, when it meets with the cold air going into the motor it saves you some gas money. Some really complicated to explain function but in the end your car burns less gas. That's it. If you go onto www.autozone.com and fill in your auto information, it will even tell you how to replace it. If you can take couple bolts out and put it back on, it should be an easy job since most of the egr valves are right on top of the motor....

Your EGR is probably clogged. If you can find it, take it off and see if you can clean up the carbon built up inside of it. If that doesn't work, then just buy a new one, but shop around, some are $10-30 cheaper.

My 02 sensor has had to be replaced twice, I have a 95 Nissan Maxima. The check engine light came on, but my car was also shaking and shuddering alot, like it wasn't getting enough gas. I don't know what your car is doing, you can go to a mechanic and they can hook your car up to a diagnostics machine and let you know. Mine did it for free.
