the problem is common with mazda's. It is the child proof lock that prevents changing the gear without pressing the brake pedal. If you go under the drivers side panel, where the brake pedal is and take a look at the brake pedal, you will see a button touching up to it. Every single time you press the brake pedal the button will be unpressed. That part goes bad. it is made out of plastic. Try to play with it if you are handy it is an easy fix. If not, you have to buy a new part and replace it. Good luck.

It's the brake light switch itself that is preventing you from shifting. It's a safety feature to ensure you are stepping on the brake before shifting into gear.
From the driver's compartment, follow the shaft of brake pedal upward. About mid way up, you should see a switch. This is the brake light switch. It basically lights up the brake lights when you step on the brake. If the switch is defective, it will prevent you from shifting out of park also.
Replace this switch with a new one.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to step on the brake pedal first to release it from Park. If you do this and still doesn't shift, then the button/switch is not engaging. Look up on the brake pedal, see if you accidentally kicked it off.

1)There is usually a fuse associated with the brake switch and shift solenoid. So first check your fuse.
2)Check to see if you can hear your solenoid click on and off by stepping on the brake and releasing rapidly
3)You should have a manual release key near your shifter
4)You can stick your ignition key or something pointy into the manual release key
5)If you don't hear your solenoid click and your fuse is good then you probably have a bad shift release solenoid.
