You need to check your leasing or rental agreement, but I am fairly certain that you can't live any where for free. If you are asking how many days notice that you need to give your landlord without paying the next month's rent, check your agreement. 30 days is usually the standard.

How long as in how long does the law say? The law doesn't say anything on this matter other than what is spelled out in the lease contract.

Would you let a freeloader hang around long when you could be renting the room out?

clearly you're tryig to pull a fast one on this landlord. All bets are off; read your lease contract and figure it out on your own.

You have to pay rent until you return the keys to the landlord.

None...you have to pay rent for as long as you live there or he can sue you. You have to give him 30 days written notice before you move. He does have to give you your deposite back if you did no damage to the property.
